The below is one of my novels that I’m currently editing/revising/rewriting. What you see is one of the pages I’ve worked on this morning. What you don’t see is that this is probably the 70th full draft rewrite, and there’ll be more. I started this novel in 2016. My process is to write the first draft as quickly as possible (for consistency in voice/tone/etc.), and then set it aside while I write another first draft for another novel. The interval between when I put it away and return to it can be a year or more. I have one published novel and a bunch of short stories in print and online literary journals. It ain’t much, but it’s okay with me. My goal is to publish great literary novels. I may reach that goal, I may not. But I write every day. I do that because I can’t not write. Your goals may be different. They are your goals, and no one can tell you you’re wrong about what they are. All I’d say is, put the work in. If you’re going to write, write the best book you can. Write the book you want to read, as they say. It may take longer than you’d like. You may never become a bestselling author. But that’s okay. You’re a writer doing their best. And that’s all one can aspire to. As many of you know, I have a novel writing blog where I discuss different aspects of craft. You can find it at Novelmasterclass.blog/blog#writing #workingwriters #editing #writersoflinkedin

Perfect Your WritingI don't recommend all of these, use your judgement! My best 2 tips are:1. Give every character a motive and goal in every scene. They aren't just there for the sake of it.2. Make your characters react to big events and conversations. No one just accepts things calmly.#writing #writers

Hi everyone,I'm starting to explore personal history work (ghostwriting memoirs, personal stories, etc.). I'm trying to find out if this kind of work is right for me. I certainly enjoy listening to people talk about their lives and what they've learned. I really enjoy fine writing, choosing the best words in a piece of writing, and editing and polishing until the words sparkle. I also have interest in other types of creative writing like creative non-fiction and fiction. I'd like to write in a few genres to satisfy my need for variety. In pursuit of that, I want to find contacts and mentors to guide me along the way and connect me to writing opportunities.Would you be able to suggest any people you know that have experiences in some or all of the personal history, creative non-fiction, and fiction genres?#writing#mentorship#personalhistorian#creativenonfiction #fiction

If you feel dread when it's time to write, you're in good company. ✏️ "Writing [a novel] is a terrible experience, during which the hair often falls out and the teeth decay." --Flannery O'Connor ✏️ "Today I am monumentally fed up with the idea of writing. I haven’t actually written anything for two days, and that makes me fed up as well.” --Douglas Adams✏️ "I hate writing. I love having written.” --Dorothy ParkerThis week, we're starting a mini-series on dread when fiction writing. I'll be sharing an article and a video, where we'll look at two key things:1. Why we dread writing. 2. How we can sit in our chairs and put fingers to the keys. We'll explore one simple (not necessarily easy) method for overcoming writers' dread. ⭐ Do you ever dread writing? If so, how do you get through it?
