I recently had the chance to visit the University of Manchester, where we introduced local MPs to some of our amazing respiratory researchers and people with lived experience of lung conditions. They did a better job than I ever could of explaining why research into lung health needs to be taken seriously! It was the first time we'd tried anything like this at Asthma + Lung UK, and I'm pleased to say it was a success by all our measures - great social media engagement, parliamentary questions, emails sent to shadow ministers resulting in a meeting (although the announcement of a summer general election means we're putting a pin in that for now...) and generally just getting the message out there. Plus many relationships, political and otherwise, strengthened. Thank you so much to Catherine Chiu, Grace Rutland, Ian Jarrold and Laurence Bourton for creating an absolute dream team combining Policy & Public Affairs and Research & Innovation to make this happen!

Some of my fab friends and colleagues are looking to set up a network specifically for women in the charity sector - if that's you, let them know what matters to you through this short survey (I've already filled it in and I promise it won't take you too long!)

So delighted that we were invited to give evidence to the Tobacco and Vapes Bill Committee today, and very proud of my team for putting together such a great briefing for Sarah!

Come and work with us! This is a great role if you're interested in research, policy and/or public affairs - it spans our relationships with academics, industry, funding bodies and government. At the moment the Research and Innovation team is working closely with the Policy and Public Affairs team to shape our campaign for next year ahead of the general election, so it's a really exciting time to join!

When I joined Asthma + Lung UK I knew there wasn’t enough money being invested in medical research into lung disease – it’s a sad truth that it’s the same for many conditions. But what I didn’t realise was just how shocking the state of respiratory care in the UK is. It’s absolutely broken. People aren’t getting a diagnosis – or they’re being diagnosed incorrectly, meaning they’re given medication that doesn’t work or even causes them harm. The most basic levels of care, such as ensuring everyone is given an annual review and medication check, aren’t being provided. There are people living with severe asthma who can’t access treatments that have been proven to dramatically reduce symptoms. And people in the poorest areas are five times more likely to die from COPD and three times more likely to die from asthma than in the richest areas. Our new report shows that lung disease costs the NHS almost £10bn a year, and it’s no surprise that things get worse in the winter. People end up in hospital needing urgent care, but they wouldn’t need to be there if they’d been given the right support to stay well in the first place. It’s a bleak picture, but it doesn’t have to be like this. By following our three-step plan to fix respiratory care, the government could save lives and save the NHS £307m a year. Everyone wins! Please join our campaign and sign our petition to let the government know that people with lung conditions won’t be ignored any longer.https://lnkd.in/eJXH6ryy

A brilliant report from our health policy team, showing how the cost of living crisis is worsening the already vast inequalities in lung health. Amazing work Andrew Cumella, Anna Francis and Laura Williamson (ANutr)!

Amazing work Chloe Owen, Olivia Scott and team! Everyone deserves access to cleaner, greener forms of transport like better cycling routes, cheaper and more connected public transport, and support for electric vehicles.

It’s been a while since I organised a parliamentary reception, but I’m absolutely thrilled with how yesterday’s celebration of our first year as Asthma + Lung UK turned out. To have a room full of funders, researchers, parliamentarians and people with lived experience was amazing enough, but welcoming a Minister and two Shadow Ministers was the icing on the cake. Thank you so much to Liz Twist MP for sponsoring the event, to our incredible speakers Andrew, Helen and Rachel, and to my lovely colleagues for all the help they gave me on the day – especially those who helped me to (sort of) defeat my new archnemesis, the pop-up event stand. I’ll be having words with that thing when it makes it back to the office!#LungHealthLottery #LungHealth #LungConditions
